I was thinking this morning, there should be more things like Goodwill, more thrift stores like that everywhere, for even LESS things going to landfills.

I was thinking this morning, there should be more things like Goodwill, more thrift stores like that everywhere, for even LESS things going to landfills. Just people getting together, even as a trade or barter system, things like flea markets or garage sales-- people do some of this already.
Reusing things is so important, and repair, when possible-- I've been seeing some cool self-repair fix-it meetups on here, too.
As I was talking to my wife about it, and I remembered this screenshot (I think about it a lot) that's attached below, that I saved from a Wired piece (right after the death of Twitter: https://archive.ph/YSCR9) about billionaires not knowing how to 'monetize' smaller groups of happier people, as we keep our tech, some try to fix their own stuff, etc. About how it's not enough to 'build a town square' on. Which is hilarious and ironic.
Billionaires don't give a FUCK about creating a 'town square'. They don't care about people, about us, about the rest of the 99%. They want to extract value until they can't, at whatever cost.
So reuse, keep things, fix things, as much as possible. That's the way of the future. Not these fuckin billionaires and their shitty corporations.

@jake4480 so true. When they use your money to oppress, your power comes from keeping your money away from them and amongst each other instead. Freedom is not-buying-their-stupid-shit!

@jake4480 buy less. if you have to buy, buy 2nd hand, or from someone local, if at all possible. that's the way it should be really...but the propaganda of the last 50 years has obscured that.
i'm trying to get better about that myself...but yep. reuse. keep, fix, 100% right.

@jake4480 My speculative solarpunk utopia headcanon is that *lots* of people work in reuse/repair/recycling

@brian thank you bud! Yeah, been thinking about this one for a WHILE. Probably could've been a blog post, too. Glad I still had that same snip on my phone from back then, hooray for digital hoarding hahaha

@mostol right? Any great scifi (or fantasy etc) you see, the people doing all of this. They're the REAL heroes.

There are a lot of them in the small towns around me because most of us are poor. The vacation cabin owners bring their nice stuff they're done with for us poor people to buy for very little. Jobs and small businesses would be nicer though.

@jake4480 That's an amazing excerpt haha.
Right here on this platform I have:- borrowed a wood chipper, and then used the woodchipper not only in my garden but in an additional friend's garden
- Acquired a food dehydrator for free, but with which I look forward to sharing if ever the need comes up again
- May also be borrowing and repairing a tractor
Which makes me sound like I live on a farm lmfao. But all of us work in tech, but have prioritised things like this too.
Very lovely

@maize oh wow these are amazing. THESE are the things I like to see! My dad worked on cars. All kinds. I didn't get that from him. I can do a thing or two though, electronic wise. I collect old game systems, old games, old toys, I just like weird old things that last.

@jake4480 those activities are exactly how you build a town square. A square full of chairs, tables and benches for happy chatting people, and bike stands.
The billionaires don't want a town square, they'd see it as wasted space, and stick a dozen franchises into it.

@jake4480 yaaa. I have enjoyed the death of social media a bit, because of how much smaller community has become, and we're getting back to more grounded practices

@maize yes! It's so great. Only been here like 3 years but wow. It's amazing. I've even donated to my instance. It's wonderful here.
