    🇨🇦 🇺🇸 🙄 Why Canadians take the risk, I'll never know!

    OTTAWA - Canada and the United States say two preclearance projects that would allow more travellers to be screened well in advance of crossing the border are set to proceed this year after many months of planning.

    The assurances follow U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra's comments that cast doubt on the future of arrangements currently allowing many passengers flying to American cities to be pre-cleared at Canadian airports by U.S. border officers.

      @SnowyCA

      I've no need to travel to the US right now, but if I did, the only way I'd cross is with pre-clearance in Canada. I'd rather get turned around in Canada rather than who knows what on actual US soil right now.

        I agree, that sounds much safer than approaching the actual border.

          The same reason people participate in other risky activities: they mistakenly believe bad things only happen to other people.

                  @SnowyCA

                  Montréal has had US pre-clearance for decades - I assume other airports, too.

                  That Hoaxtra doesn't seem to know this is ... not a surprise.

                  Note that once you are through their gateline, you are considered to be on US soil and can be deported from there.

                    @SnowyCA “Ottawa pledged money for planning, design and construction of the preclearance facility.”

                    Sounds a lot like it. The only thing we don’t seem to pay for is the operations (understand, personnel)
