Some people will do anything for money, or maybe they are just in dire situations.

@futurebird @count_01 please don't gloss over that "dire situations" detail. People can be coerced into doing things completely against their morals.
I'm sure this scheme was designed with that kind of coercion in mind.
The good news about that is that such recruits are much easier to turn... especially if they believe there's a way out.
Let's not waste that leverage by lobbing them all in with the zealots.
@iwein @futurebird If a bad lot in life convinces you that burning down the country that produced it is a good use of your day, I'm not going to waste mine respectfully differing. I'm going to spit on you and everyone you chose to follow, and you can find pity elsewhere.
-
@futurebird If they leave before their 5-year commitment, they also have to pay back any hotel stays during their tenure.
And now you know why they put them up at the Hilton. They've sold themselves into indenture.
@vivtek @futurebird do you have a source on that? I tried searching and only found folks claiming it without a source.

Some people will do anything for money, or maybe they are just in dire situations. Anyway $50k to join ICE might tempt some people.
Well.
* It's not 50k it's 10k per year for five years. Big difference.
* It is a five year *commitment* bonus. You need to work the full five years OR you must pay it back.
* So if your work for 3 years then quit you owe them 30k! (money you may need for a lawyer)
* The first 10k will be about $6500 after taxes.Just so everyone knows.
@futurebird I’m sure they take the 50k out of the DHS budget the minute the new hire signs on the line, and then they put it somewhere for safe keeping for five years, like a bank account in Qatar

@futurebird i'm genuinely convinced this exists specifically to bring on stupid people. no sane person would ever take a job for a bonus that you have to pay back if you don't work over five years. they're weeding out the potentially okay people because they want ICE to be dominated by bumbling fools, after all they're easier to control and will take whatever order you give -
I was in Guatemala once 20+ years ago, and as our bus pulled into the city my partner and I were going to stay in, the road was blocked by some kind of protest. Being the kind of people who are interested in that kind of thing, we followed up later to find out what the demonstration was about.
It turns out that it was an organization of former soldiers who had participated in the genocidal war on the country's mostly indigenous population a few decades earlier. They were pissed that they weren't getting the full pensions and benefits they were promised for participating in the slaughter.
The US isn't 1980s Guatemala (not yet, at least), but I can well imagine a time in the future when today's ICE agents take to the streets to vent their anger not that Trump conned them, but that some future, post-conflict government isn't moving fast enough to pay them what they thought they would get paid, rather than what their contracts actually said. They will never accept that it's their own hero who screwed them.
@futurebird @ThatWeltschmerz who could imagine that *America* would fail to pay it's dues to its footsoldiers?

@futurebird As usual the government promise of easy money, isn't. But since it obviously isn't targeted at the brightest of people, it's effective.

The irony of getting $6500, and then having to pay back $10k leaving someone with a growing debt of $3500 per year, plus other debts not declared (apparently travel tdy? as someone pointed out), plus a lifetime of civil legal liability, just to quit an awful job.

@futurebird seeing this after my comment here https://bsky.app/profi... i'm half wondering if maybe this actually is the next phase of the plan, to get ICE agents to loot and pillage the cities they're deployed to for sustenance in order to cause maximum damage -

They knew that they were going to have extreme drop off after people saw what they were going to do with them and built in a brutal debt-slavery scheme to make sure their capture of the person was whole and without escape.
It's absolutely quintessentially neoliberal.
IF decent people incl any rich people (lol lmao) the rich person would publicly offer to pay any ICE chud's debt +$10k *if* they go public with what they know.

Sadly for them, Trump's new ICE goon hires haven't learned that with Trump, the overt steal or small print takes back more than Trump pretended to give.

the average ICE chud knows the same as any other average one
They’re disposable fascist foot soldiers.

@ryanprior @futurebird Man, I should really know better, especially these days. I *also* just saw a headline, but I've bookmarked this and will attempt to run it down.

@ryanprior @futurebird According to what I'm finding, DHS denies any repayment requirement even of the signing bonus (although the bonus is in many cases staggered, not all at once). They also deny a lot of other things, so I take that to be a lie, but their contracts are not public.

@vivtek @futurebird I appreciate you following up on that for me! We'll keep working on sorting the truth from the hype, the forces of misinformation are certainly arrayed against us

To my mind the important thing about this is that no matter how you get in they have created a system that’s really hard to get out of. This is what the mob, or street gangs, or company towns do: make entry easy and attractive, then establish an exit tax that’s just enough to keep people in…

@futurebird I sure a lot of poor white passing people that will consider this deal. They see a paycheck and they are $6500 away from being homeless.
