FUN FACT: Vogue LatinoamΓ©rica was produced in #Venezuela and it was the one #fashion magazine that became the Farah Diba of #Iran Vogue outside of Vogue Arabia.

Farah Diba was literally one of 2 WoC Vogue-Venezuela would allow. Bianca Jagger was the other one. not even Grace Jones.

all am saying: BEWARE THE WHITE GAZE.

the petromafia backed Pahlavis will exploit it to coopt the iranian insurgency.

    LAST THING
y’all know am a former Latin American Studies professor. that’s a shorthand for the even more obscure, am an expert in baroque and neobaroque aesthetics.

i spent almost 10 years of my life studying how people created art under the most repressive eras in Spain, and what is now called LatinoamΓ©rica. i was literally paid to read pictures.

look at this #Iran one submitted by Delta Chat

      LET ME BE CLEAR

am not questioning the authenticity of the uprisings in #Iran. Iran is part of the global south that is running out of potable #water.

you know who is too? Saudi Arabia. why do you think they are using #techbros & #AI data centers to access resources from water rich countries?

the images am reading in the above post are meant to #americanize #europeanize the insurgency in Iran. THAT IS THE POINT OF THE WHITE GAZE.

you know who were experts at it? THE PAHLAVIS.

@blogdiva I think that's the clear problem. Running out of water. From what I've read it is disastrous. It's either death by regime or death by lack of water.

I was also reading that they have a massive corruption/oligarch problem who are looting the country.

The lack of water is leading to a reckoning because the govt is inflexible in fixing the issues. If they don't solve the water problems (they've been warned for years) Iranians are going to die.

My favorite version history is history through a very specific lens. ("Cod" is one of my favorite books). Here's Liza using fashion mag photos from decades ago to tell a political story.

i agree the photos will attract a white male gaze predicated on leering colonist transgression

but if we agree these are authentic iranian women protesting in this way, i choose to see them for what they chose to depict of themselves

the loaded derivative meaning then gets injected into the photos after the women's intentions

i don't know how to solve this problem

maybe iranian women become aware of western gooners, throw up a little in their mouths, and no longer take such photos

just responding to say, the post is now a thread about the Pahlavis and how they exploited the white gaze to stay in power.

          again, the insurrection is real.

what we need to be vigilant about is how media is used to americanize, and to a leasser extent europeanize, the global south. who benefits from that?

who benefits from selling images of insurrectionist Iranian women that look like out of Vogue?

i mean, there are still Pahlavites in Iran.

          aesthetics are always political.

@mc @benroyce @blogdiva || And we listen to the talking heads tell us how evil or cruel those people are. The citizens that just want to see their children grow, to have enough food and shelter for a family are the ones to provide cannon fodder. In todays parlance to watch their kids die on the 6 o'clock news. There's a song about "putting those leader on a shelf and let them fight among themselves", sounds good to me. How far would Pvt Bone Spurs get or the rest . . . Maybe Someday.

Oh yes Israel and the USA have designs on Iran

                This is the secondary concern

The primary concern is the will of Iranian people

To invert those concerns is to betray the Iranian people because hating the USA and Israel is more important

                Nah

                Why do that?

                Do this:

                Fuck Israel

                Fuck the USA

                And fuck the Iranian regime

It's not hard to say that. There's no contradiction. In fact that is the most principled stand

Threats of conquest over Greenland, an invasion of Venezuela, Increased damage to citizens and migrants of no concern. Seems to be working. If the govt is really overthrown I think he'll be at best a historical token figurehead used by the true leaders

@benroyce @blogdiva The women of Iran have been seriously oppressed and suffered for a long time. Let’s not interpret their actions through any lens except empathy β€” stand in their shoes for a moment. This is their expression of self-determination, and it is very radical relative to the previous norms forced on them. So I say, good for them! Will others try to exploit these images for propaganda? Of course. That is the way of things, and it is good to be mindful of it. Right now, their resistance to the will of the mullahs is akin to the Germans tearing down the Berlin Wall. The joy is infectious.
