@CiaraNi Thank you, Ciara, for the intriguing photo and delightfully human commentary at a time when so much in the world seems depressingly wrong. I enjoy following your toots. ๐Ÿ˜Š

@juligudehus I was about to answer 'no, because asking a stranger if they were taking a photo for Mastodon would have made me seem weird' then realised that it probably wouldn't have seemed any weirder than me very publicly eyeballing a wall at close range and taking multiple pictures of one brick.

Looks like it's been there for a while, so probably solid workmanship. Nice one!

@CiaraNi I wonder whether you'll find a mulberry tree behind that wall.

@grahamperrin That seems specific, but I can't place the reference. I may have a vague memory of a nursery rhyme or skipping-rope song with a mulberry but otherwise am blank now.

@CiaraNi @ColesStreetPothole I agree regarding the mystery. Iโ€™m sure the actual explanation is disappointingly prosaic. Itโ€™s better to leave it unexplained and evocative.

@michaelgemar @ColesStreetPothole 'Evocative' is a nice word for it - yes, this very physical, functional brick manages to seem evocative.

@CiaraNi I don't think there's any point of reference, I'm simply reminded of a very interesting mulberry tree that an old friend and I once discovered close to a similar wall.

We had never seen a mulberry tree before. There were loads of birds in the area, the tree was laden with berries, plus masses of berries on the ground beneath it. We didn't know they were mulberries. All we knew was that the birds went nowhere near them, so we assumed that the berries were poisonous, and (me being me) eventually I decided to eat one.

A passer-by (it might have been someone who was photographing bricks) saw us looking confused and approached to tell us the story of how the mulberry tree arrived; and why the birds simply knew not what to do with it.

@CiaraNi Lovely photo, love the two specially-placed bricks.

I suspect there was a hole in the wall that needed patching and the only materials they could find were the bricks.
