It's a failure for affordability and climate.

It's a huge win for oil companies and American automakers.

@chris I really think rebates are the wrong approach. Car companies will always adjust for it and then complain when the rebates go away.

My simple solution: Don't allow advertising of ice cars. If a car company wants to advertise, they'll have to advertise their EVs.
Just watch how quickly EV's become the standard.

@chris Do we really need such a policy? EVs are better vehicles: cheaper to fuel, cheaper to maintain, and they can be cheaper to buy. And their advantage increases every year.

The most useful thing the government could do to accelerate EV adoption would be to let in more Chinese-made cars.

@mpjgregoire I think if we expect to influence the car industry to shift to EVs then we need the mandated timelines. We don't the rebates as much for consumers but they do work hand in hand by reassuring industry that there will be ample demand. As it stands though, Canadians have bought all the EVs offered so far

(aside from the recent dive in Tesla sales for completely unrelated reasons)

@ZenHeathen @anakin78z i think it's a great idea... but I think they are way too concerned about the reaction of automakers to have the courage to do it.
