    Reinventing the wheel — badly

After leaving the #WHO, #Trump officials propose a replacement 3 times more expensive to duplicate it.

#HHS proposes spending $2 billion a year to re-create systems the #US accessed through the #WorldHealthOrganization at a fraction of the #cost, according to officials briefed on the matter.

The effort to build a #US run alternative would re-create systems such as laboratories, data-sharing networks & rapid-response systems the US abandoned when it announced its withdrawal from the #WHO last year & dismantled the US Agency for International Development [#USAID], according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share internal deliberations.

While #Trump accused the #WHO of demanding “unfairly onerous payments,” the alternative his administration is considering carries a price tag about three times what the #US contributed annually to the #UN #health agency. The US would build on bilateral agreements with countries & expand the presence of its health agencies to dozens of additional nations [starting from scratch], the officials said.

@Nonilex This is all about personal control, power and autonomy for Trump and his family, and his backers. Given Kennedy is the health minister in the USA, the grasp this administration has on health and virus spread, infection control, nutrition, poverty etc world wide is specious to say the least. This is concerning and dangerous, and it deserves to go down in flames ASAP.

@Nonilex It's worth the added costs when he (& his anti-science anti-vax NIH) can proclaim the results of testing agree with his positions. [heavy sarcasm emoji]

@Nonilex None of this is really going to happen. There will most likely be a pandemic in North America and next to nothing will be done to counter it or deal with it. When you are facing both a climate disaster and pandemic threats, incompetency and utter irresponsibility means a lot of people are going to die for no reason at all. Unless things change, this is what will go on.

“#Spending 2 to 3 times the #cost to create what we already had access to makes absolutely no sense in terms of fiscal stewardship,” said Tom Inglesby, director Center for Health Security at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of #PublicHealth, who served as a snr covid19 adviser during the Biden admin. “We’re not going to get the same quality or breadth of information we would have by being in the #WHO, or have anywhere the influence we had.”

Under Bob Kennedy, US health policy-making is as efficient as a Rube Goldberg machine.

Yes but as long as they and their cronies sit at the center of the new organization _they_ receive the skim.

Everything Trump touches is designed to funnel money directly to him and indirectly to his cronies.

The man and his ilk are a literal blight on the species.

You can't get far looking at this from the point of view where it's a normal policy that can be critiqued on its merits.

For a fascist or his oligarch pals, it's not about how much money the government is spending, it's about whose pockets the government money is spent into.
