I put him to sleep yesterday. My sweet boy for 15 years. He’d come to me from an abusive home. You could see it in how he held himself those first months, like he was always bracing.

But he figured it out. Not all at once but in small surrenders. Picking up a toy. Playing so free. The way he’d eventually push his head under your hand, asking.

    I miss him.

If you have a moment, I’d like to hear about your animals. The ones you still carry with you.

@flexghost You'll always carry him in your heart, and I think that's what counts the absolute most. I grew up with dogs, always rescues from the shelter, and while the ones I grew up with are long gone, we always followed the rule of twos if not threes, so that there's always one of them left to carry the torch on to another generation. ❤️

      condolences

We had to put our cat down about a year ago. She was slowly dying from cancer at 18 years old.

Just after we saw a homeless cat a few streets over. Abandoned when the old man had to go to a home. After consideration for a few days and the weather turning bad we forcefully adopted her.

Now a days she wants to be on our lap all the time 🥰🥰

@flexghost we have a good cat, and the other cat. This one is the other. Sometimes she let's her guard down and pretends to be friendly. She wants to be, but trusts nothing.

So sorry. These 2 are dogs 13 and 14, so I've been through it a bit. It's always hard. I don't think I can be without a dog, so I have 2. You can see the shaved leg and scar on the little one from surgery for her blown out knee.

@flexghost They're big, beautiful, smart, and gentle. Herding dogs by nature. He was great because once he got used to his new home I could just walk around with him off leash (I live in pretty rural place) or let him out on his own without worry. Neighbors funnily enough were scared of him at first because they thought he was an actual bear. He was terrified of storms and hated car rides. About the only time he willingly got into the car was when I rescued him from the shelter.

@flexghost He's a complete contrast from the dog we got last year, who is definitely not the dog I would have gotten normally. We ended up taking him home because when we went to look at him (from some randos), the poor bugger was in such bad shape we felt morally obligated to take him home rather than leave him with them. Malnourished and clearly abused, he's come a long way. Telly is young, medium-small, high energy, runs like a maniac, and has some social issues, but is (mostly) a sweetie.

@flexghost The rats have been gone for years, but they were mostly kept in cages and the cats we had at the time didn't bother them.

Sometimes people ask me if Lumi is a rescue, she is delicate and slightly fearful, but no that's just how she is ever since I took her home from the litter at 3 months old.
Thank you for being the anchor to your friend around which he could re-learn to trust and thrive 💜

Bo was a very good dog, the gentlest I've ever met, and I still kind of expect her to poke her head out when the door opens.

Also, as pictured below, capable of looking as noble as heck.

They say that dogs only break your heart once - I'm sorry that moment with your boy had to be now.

Thanks. Though the reason we had to put her down was not nice.
The cancer was in her throat, preventing her from decently eating (how we noticed something was wrong).
And it slowly was impacting her ability to breath.

With the low chance of recovery and her age we decided to put her out of her missery.
She died on our couch while being petted by the both of us.

My mom asks me occasionally: what would make a person mean or racist? She just can't wrap her mind around that kind of thinking. I tell her that those people have to hate themselves first.

@flexghost so sorry for your loss 🐕 🌈.

Here's my first and adopted lovely lady Yana. 14+ years now, body slowly giving in, but her spirit is strong. Now 6 years with us, coming from a loved home (her owner died).

This is her playing a few minutes today.

@Frieke72 @flexghost What a sweetheart she is! I can see her spirit is joyful 💕. Sleeping most of the day to charge an old battery, but giving it her all when awake. Enjoy every minute of her
