Apple made $117.8bn in total profit (not revenue, of course) over the past four quarters, which is an average of $323 million per day. So when they loudly donate $1m to a charity or a disaster relief fund, they're giving 0.3% of their profits for that single day.
Lot of reposts on this! I feel like Iโve found my people, as Iโm on a bit of a journey these days. #FOSS as resistance, an end to billionaires, crush fascism, redistribute wealth. Social justice and equality and privacy for all. Kindness, but mind the paradox of tolerance.

@mattgemmell And yet, when itโs for Trumpโs inauguration fund, it does speak louder than โjustโ 0.3% daily profit. -

@mattgemmell When we eat the Rich, we save Bezos for dessert

@Thorn I hear you. Redistribute wealth!
@mattgemmell at least a little bit... Or everyone needs to start to value artists as least as much as they value pastors and pizza delivery people.

@mattgemmell in Chile, our dictatorship in the 80s created Teleton, a TV show to gather money for disabled people (in Chile there is no public rehab intitutions). The big companies are the big heroes: giving millions while saving other million in taxes. Of course, mid-class people end paying the most part every year.

@mattgemmell philanthropy is not a substitute for taxes.

Exactly the same when Arnault gave for Notre-Dame

@mattgemmell What do they pay in taxes?

@mattgemmell are the costs of the press release preparation included in this 1m?

@mattgemmell I hope people will understand that the point of this isn't "Apple should spend more on charity" (although they should) but "this is how little Apple gives while crowing about their philanthropy"

@tankgrrl Exactly.

@mattgemmell What do they pay in taxes?
@Thomas_Ekstrom Less than they should, certainly.

@minzastro Given the tax write-off, presumably so!

@mattgemmell That is what i thought too.

@mattgemmell Another sad wrinkle: when you "donate" through a corporation to a charity or relief fund there is no guarantee the money is paid out in a timely manner - it's not a passthrough. Often corporations put it in an account, accrue interest, and do a one-time tax write-off donation for the year.
@bgannin @mattgemmell But it can be stolen from them while it's in escrow!
