A retired British primary school teacher with a British passport and a valid visa was shackled, chained and detained for six weeks by ICE in the US while on holiday.

@GossiTheDog Retired British primary school teacher ignores warning of other white European tourists locked up by literal Nazis and goes on holiday to the place where the Nazis are locking people up*
@Linza
“I knew it was happening but I didn’t think it would happen to ME”

@slyborg You've added some details to the story there.
It's possible to leave the US this way, but your car rental company has to do some paper work beforehand. Since this was not the case, he could not enter Canada with his car. Why would that be so? The most plausible explanation: He did want to re-enter the US.
@publictorsten It’s stated in the article that he planned to return to the UK to retire, partly out of frustration with being unable to secure permanent residency. I remain astonished that we’re arguing over his itinerary when the issue is that he was imprisoned for more than a month over an expired visa with no criminal history. Deporting the man immediately would have been harsh but understandable, locking him up AND his wife with valid paperwork is inexplicable.

@slyborg Maybe I should be happy that other people finally begin to see the inexplicable. Like this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_Alcatraz

@GossiTheDog How is it possible to elect such a fjott-nisse? Is this really the will of the US ppl? Tragic

US citizen here. Why would anyone from outside this fucked up country run by a racist, fascist, government, knowing that there is a very real possibility of this happening, come here for any reason?
@EricMartin@mastodon.social
Arrogance / Exceptionalism. Thinking they'll blend in without realising not all Yanks are like that; not to mention that the ones that are don't care if you're a Brit, they have quotas to meet and bonuses to earn.
It is interesting which cases hit the headlines; or do I mean which cases do more people give a crap about?
"Special Relationship" FFS.
Just look at how Duh Fuhrer is trying to screw us over on trade. Now insisting on Chlorinated not Coronation Chicken for example.
AND the wanker appears to ignoring the no fly rule Starmer ordered...
I am looking forward to the shooting down of non compliant US planes for violating our airspace*
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social
*OK, I know, spineless shits over here, but we can hope. The US doesn't blink before shooting down non US aircraft I am given to understand.

@GossiTheDog @Gargron never travel to the US, even if they somehow are allowed to elect a new president. 77 million of them voted for this.

@GossiTheDog "I was aware" she said. And then decided to visit a dangerous backward third-world shit-hole country anyway.

@GossiTheDog They go to the USA, with a tense immigration situation, with an expired work visa. Dumb.
Other cases referred are someone doing domestic work to pay her holidays under a touristic visa (work without permit), other come as tourist with tattoo equipment (to work the ICE supposed, as I would have supposed too), and other overstayed their tourist visa. No wonder they have problems.
The Schengen agreement in Europe has made people dumb?

The USA have always been the Land of the Shackled. An oligarchy where the rich owned people one way or another (and raped minors they considered their property). And the shackle should be their official symbol, not an eagle.

@GossiTheDog So what did Karen do wrong? Being married to her husband who's VISA expired so they wanted to enter Canada?

@publictorsten @slyborg And why had his wife Karen been arrested six weeks? Because she was his wife?

@realSiegfried @slyborg I'm not defending ICE. But i cannot be shocked by illegal detentions anymore.

@placandeker @GossiTheDog "Having problems" is something else than being put into a gulag.

@realSiegfried BTW: There is no reason to treat the husband this way, too. But they do it to thousands every day.

@sparekonto @GossiTheDog from the viewpoint of this particular Native American, the USA has always been about white supremacy, land grabs, genocide, racial caste systems, and stepping on the necks of people deemed inferior -
Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, immigrant groups, natives, all of it. Under Trump it has come out of the closet as it were and become acceptable to be a racist prick. But it never went away. -

I've traveled with rental cars across the Canadian border and it was never an issue. Now under Trump it is. It's fucking ridiculous.
