Some hard truths about the ActivityPub API -- managing state is hard when you are using a linear timeline as provided by the C2S inbox and outbox.

People are reinventing the exact same tools to solve the exact same problems. The tools themselves are not magical and special, so there's no need to reinvent them.

@julian @skavish I don't know much about infrastructure, but isn't the main reason this isn't done the fact that it'd wreak havoc on small instances whose content gets shared by users of big instances?

How do we grow the fediverse? Says @evan@cosocial.ca...

                                  1. E2EE messages; private messages are not encrypted widely on the fediverse; a bit of a shoutout to @benpate@mastodon.social's upcoming talk tomorrow <img class="not-responsive emoji" src="https://activitypub.space/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/1f609.png?v=513019a8bfd" title="πŸ˜‰" />
                                  2. Addressing; complicated and hard for people to understand; promote use of lists (like "Close Friends", "Family", etc.)
                                  3. Hashtag feeds; they federate widely through the network, but saturation is not complete; "hashtags do not spread through the fediverse evenly"; a shoutout to his project tags.pub
                                  4. Aggregation and remixing; combining search terms, people, and hashtags into a topical feed (sounds a lot like activitypub.space πŸ‘€)

The panelists now asked which default server they'd recommend. These questions are hard!

                                    1000017147.jpg

Even @ozoned@btfree.social wasn't sure prior to the panel.

@evan@cosocial.ca suggesting that maybe you already have one and don't know; suggests checking your orgs and associations; possibly self-hosting or checking joinmastodon.org

@django@social.coop warns about checking Instance rules to align on values.

@julian @ozoned the real question is: is Ostatus still part of the fediverse?

@evan@cosocial.ca explaining that "the fediverse is quiet" is a bug, not a feature.

                                          Good thing we have a solution for it <img class="not-responsive emoji" src="https://activitypub.space/assets/plugins/nodebb-plugin-emoji/emoji/android/1f63c.png?v=513019a8bfd" title="😼" />
