      @astro_jcm I immediately blocked any page that posted this abomination and asserted it as true.

      @WriteDragon Same. Happy that this kind of accounts aren't that popular here.

        Today Facebook crushed my soul with this abomination.

        A while ago I wrote this article explaining how to spot fake #astrophotography images using science:

        https://www.eso.org/public/blog/csi-astronomy/

        That article has now been superseded by "this is fake because <waves hands angrily in despair>"

          @literally I think you confused the terminology there. A solar eclipse is when the sun gets eclipsed by the moon, so the moon is in front of the sun.

          The text description is not the problem here.

          @gunchleoc @literally Exactly. Mentioning the lunar surface is ok here, because in a proper HDR image of a solar eclipse you can rescue details of the lunar surface illuminated by the earthshine. The caption, on its own, is correct (except for the first sentence claiming this pic is from the Feb 17 eclipse). It's the image that is problematic. But if one has never seen a real one before it's easy to fall for it.

              @astro_jcm oh, this is truly awful

              And yes, most of the older people on FB still simply don't have the background to question it

                @astro_jcm hey thank you for posting your article, it was a great read, and one of the (real!) photos is gonna be my inspiration for a daily art prompt today

                Also, I share your "uuuuuuugh" at the folks enthusiastically and uncritically sharing these.

                  @65dBnoise @astro_jcm Actually that's slightly fake news. His treatise also had bible theology in it and the science bit was obsolete. Contemporary Kepler went further. Galileo also had mistaken ideas about tides that sailors had complained of.
                  His punishment was to stay in the Villa he didn't want to leave.
                  The Churches did do terrible things, but this often quoted one is misleading. The Pope was a close friend of Galileo.
                  BTW Kepler's mother was accused of being a witch, but got off.

                  @raymaccarthy @65dBnoise @astro_jcm

                  Kepler's mom was tortured first.
