This is borderline psychopathy aka narcissism, all of which are mental disorders that gave birth to fascism. Just like people getting brainwashed in churches, this is a result of someone with said mental disorders in politics, brainwashing like in church, resulting with everyone catching the same program/mental disorder, especially, like people who converted to nazism, benefited from the conversion with all sorts of benefits and immunities.
