  • There have been exactly two innovations in web browsers in the last 16 years:

@jwz I miss the clock widget on Mosaic. It really helped me not waste an *entire* night on the WWW.

@evacide It's ironic that my company blocks anything with that domain in it. Including the SMB share we're supposed to download it from...

In this case, I'm a sysadmin and won't be able to read and react to this because IT has it blocked.

These are the same people who allow access to the Daily Mail, but not The Guardian...

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon "Science and Religion are like the shoes on your feet. You can get further with both than with just one."

Modern Biblical scholarship is very much based on the scientific method. What's wrong is that _churches_ have not kept up, and even where they have, they don't educate their members.

Martin Gardner said a pastor has to choose between being a loyal liar or a truthful traitor.

@lauren @_daisy I picked a phone with 1) removable battery and 2) a hard switch for the ringer. Like you, mine is off a lot. I tell people, "Google doesn't need to know I'm going to my doctor's office."

I'm less sure of the geo-stalking, because I've read that phones will still store location data, even when nominally "off". And then upload that data when on a network again. I have no way to know if that's true.

I also keep GPS and BTLE off. I don't use the web on a phone, nor install apps.

@evacide Yes, please. I find these things come in "weak sauce" for people who just want "a bit more" in their lives. There are others along a spectrum; what I'd like is a guide from someone who *actually* has to resist the efforts of people with money and resources. (I'll still read, even if you aren't going to do that, since you still have far more real-world experience with this than anyone I know.)

@mstrife @cstross If I have to buy one of those all spying all the time cars, I'd start by disconnecting the antenna. Then I'd hunt for the hard drive (usually behind the glove box), because repair shops like to download all that data and upload it to the vendor.

But not everyone can do that, and if shops started doing it for customers, I'm sure the car companies would sue them for violating some sort of contract. If that failed, they'd pay Congress for a new law.

@Sablebadger @eedly @AndrewBC @mathew @angusm @cstross Right next to that blue bikini he likes to wear, even though it emphasizes his, uh, shortcomings.
