Found a female Black-backed Woodpecker (Picoides arcticus) today! Quite a rare sighting here.
They mainly live in recently burnt forests where they feed on beetle larvae burrowed in the charred trees.

Today we managed to pass a leaking old beaver dam that is now frozen to the ground.
Snowshoe-packed a trail further into the bush. Yodelled and the old chickadees found us (the families seem to have their territories). How did we know it was them?
They landed on us immediately . And talked!
Happy to see they have survived another year.

The full moon (Snow Moon) rising at supper time.
The Ojibwe call it the Bear Moon because around this time of year the bear cubs are being born in the winter dens.

And ... we've got birds! A flock of Pine Grosbeaks .
Today it warmed from -24 in the morning to -4 (in the sun!) in the afternoon.
The birds seem to say: the coldest cold is over!

@Michigander Yes, it doesn't pile up every year like this. Photo was taken in 2021. Unfortunately the road to get there is no longer maintained in the winter. Would love to see it again, take a photo with people in front to get the perspective of the size of these.
