I'm not sure if this fits what you are talking about here, but I found a problem with groups is the level of knowledge assumed and desired.
Some groups are made up of Great Experts pontificating solely for the benefit of other Great Experts.* Which is overwhelming if you are not a GE. And the participants may be impatient or unhelpful to the clueless new guy.

Where to go to watch music videos on the Fediverse, or somewhere Fediverse-adjacent?
Watching music videos on a Well Known Video Site. Just let it run, showing videos it thinks I will like, is pretty good at it.
But of course I am feeding the Great Beast who will eventually render us all down in the bio-vats.
So where should I go instead? I really just want something I let run in the background.
Paying is OK, preferably most of it going to the artists.
I've been on the other end of this, and requested to follow people. Not sure what my success rate is on that.
Some people can follow me without a problem, some instead "Request to Follow", I suspect some local instance thing that flags some Follows as questionable & asks me to confirm or deny them. Sometimes the requests look legitimate and I grant them, other times they look spammy, either attractive women w/o much content (which makes me suspect they want me to subscribe to their naughty webcam) or like you describe, & both types are rejected.
That was my first thought.
Is he the one who doesn't distribute all those checks we aren't getting?
