This is thanks to Mastodon's optional "limited federation mode" which uses allowlists instead of blocklists. This mode blocks all servers by default and only federates with servers you list. If your allowlist is blank, then it doesn't federate at all.
If you're interested in using this mode, there's more info at:

Mastodon server admins, important news!It will, but getting them to steap away from recommending mastodon.social is a massive step in the right direction.
My understanding is they may tweak the requirements for being recommended, as this is the first iteration of doing this.

Mastodon server admins, important news!Indeed! And it's a really clever solution they've come up with, it solves two problems at once by prioritising servers in the user's own language or location and encouraging decentralisation that way.

The Mastodon developers are going to stop suggesting mastodon.social as a "default server".
Instead, the "default" server suggestions are going to be ones for a user's language and/or geographical location.
If your server matches these:
- General public server
- Running vanilla Mastodon
- Mastodon Covenant compliant
- Have existed for 1+ year
- Have shut-down & disaster plans...then see this post for details: https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/115989802617165343

If you're running a public Fedi server, it might be a good idea to have a personal or alternative account that isn't on your server. If you're running a public Fedi server, it might be a good idea to have a personal or alternative account that isn't on your server.
If your server goes down and all your accounts are on it, there will be an information black hole about what happened as all your contact accounts will be broken.
There have been several cases where servers went down for days and people worried they had closed down permanently, but they were actually technical difficulties that took days to fix.
