@mjr @jens the comic is not actually about being racist against sea lions, it is about the particular behaviour the sea lion is engaging in. Likewise "sealioning" is not commonly used to refer to someone standing up against bigotry, but about people who jump into conversations with a persistent "debate me bro" attitude. Hope this helps

Hey fellow admins, here's something you can do to make the fediverse massively better for anyone who's a woman and/or Black: ban "reply guys", mansplainers, and sea lions (https://wondermark.com/c/1062/) on your server. You know what I mean. Make a rule against it. Encourage other people to report it. Go into the comments of a popular post and proactively block or ban the people engaging in this behaviour. If a particular server is known to be bad for this because the admins tolerate this behaviour from their users, preemptively mute or block it server-wide. Consider public shaming.

Just because it's not outright harassment or slurs doesn't make it okay. It still actively drives people away.

If this is an undue burden for you or your moderators, your server is too big. Stop accepting new users and add more moderators.

@mkj @sundogplanets god knows the Western Canon is stodgy and Eurocentric and male-centric and all that, but like, Greek legends and the Bible and such give you the 101 versions that science fiction writers are adapting/riffing on/inspired by. what i'm trying to say is, even the most basic bitch humanities education could have helped these people

@sundogplanets it's incredibly embarrassing and pathetic that a lot of the techie sorts with access to power now are people who…like I say, there's no such thing as reading too much science fiction, but there IS such a thing as reading too LITTLE stuff that ISN'T science fiction.
