@0xabad1dea To clarify about federation, dozens if not hundreds of projects have tried federation, and there are only two that have actual federation and an actually decent UX.

@kkarhan Self-hosting would not be a good fit for my usecase, and IRC doesn't have message history, which makes it entirely useless. Any that don't run into those issues?

Matrix: Constant technical difficulties, probably 80% of the troubleshooting of all the services I tried was for Matrix and I couldn't even really figure out why it wasn't working in the end. To make matters worse, I actually have experience with Matrix unlike most of the rest of this list
Session: Looks kinda cool, maybe, but I only found one person to chat with on there
Signal groupchats: It's fine, but obviously nowhere close to the features of Discord. But it's easy to use and quite good if what you want is actually a groupchat and not a Discord server
Stoat: Looks cool, unfortunately their infrastructure cannot keep up with demand, like, at all, hopefully they can increase their capacity, but it's a pretty bad experience currently

@funkylab @djlink Good to know! Honestly the takeaway should probably not be "don't use SSDs for long-term storage" and more "If you want a specific storage device to last longer than a decade, do your research and don't assume whatever random consumer hardware you're currently using will work"

@RandyMongenel That article isn't debunking this claim at all though. It's debunking claims that it can happen on the scale of weeks, and explaining that you'd have to come up with a very specific scenario for that to happen. It is worth noting that a year is the minimum spec, and probably you could get 2-3 years out of them unplugged, especially if you're storing at cooler temperatures

@bloor Those would make great movie props. As for making great audio cables, they'd probably do exactly as well as everything else

@dianea The way they're scaled in the image doesn't even look good, they're not increasing in height steadily, the quarter is too big, and yeah, it's not even well-executed
