@tuukkao I can see how it's different if it's clearly all AI with no human effort at all, I don't enjoy reading those either. But if you can't really tell or a human has reviewed it, I think it's perfectly fine. Using AI alone shouldn't be a problem, it's more about how you use it.

It just sounds like some people want to ban AI for writing alt text altogether, and I think that's a bad idea. In this narrow scope, how is AI any different from OCR, which has been around forever? It's just a tool meant to help, nothing more.

@tero Hmm, interesting. That sounds more like anti-AI or Mastodon HOA behavior than anything else. If the text is descriptive, would it really matter?

Naturally, if the text is incomplete or contains mistakes, those should be corrected, regardless of whether AI was used or not. But I honestly don't see how using a tool to streamline writing descriptive text is a bad thing in itself.

This update includes today's latest daily build with 54 new commits from upstream.

@lashman @MonaApp Yes, it’s difficult on iPhone without dependencies. I have an app called Locally AI that runs chatbots with local LLMs on iPhone, but it downloads gigabytes of data inside the app, I doubt Mona would want to do that. However, a "set up your local OpenAI/ollama API endpoint URL here" option would be nice. That way, it would be possible to connect Open WebUI or LLM Studio (and similar tools) to the app.

One of the good use cases of AI. Didn’t know the new @MonaApp has this.

The biggest pain point Juhani mentioned at the end of the video is the lack of users. Without users, there's not much reason to use the app. There are already plenty of tracking apps out there. @WTL

Threads shows this if you use "bad words" in your post. Well, fuck you. F-bombs are harmless these days, compared to the bigger picture. People are dying, we are allowed to be angry.

@WTL I actually don't care that much about the social features there, I just enjoy the visuals and stats. That's probably why I didn't notice your absence. Still, I do browse the runs here on Mastodon, so that's kind of the social aspect for me. Best of both worlds, I guess.

Didn't know @lehtimaeki had a YouTube channel! Subscribed right away. I've been thinking about leaving Strava too, but since I already use Meta services and other corporate platforms, I've stayed, mostly because their API still works. I use it on a small scale to save my runs to a cached JSON file that I can pull into different apps I've built, and I still enjoy the social aspect.

I use around 20 different running apps out of curiosity, and honestly, there are no real alternatives to social running apps. 99% of them are for tracking. If I had the time, I'd build "my own Strava" or even a decentralized running app. But for now, I'll stick with Strava, it works fine for me. I like my "running feed", one single source of truth for all my runs.

For reading, I switched to the Bookshelf app from Goodreads years ago (https://getbookshelf.com). I lost the social aspects of reading, but I don't really miss them since I read alone anyway. There are platforms like Hardcover, StoryGraph, and Bookwyrm, but each of them seems to lack something, whether it's a proper app, features, or decent UI, so I stick with Bookshelf, which is completely local and has a nice user interface.

The way I see it, we have to live with these cognitive dissonances: either choose independence and stay mostly alone or accept the corporate walled gardens for the social features. I use both, roughly 50/50 commercial and open source apps. For the commercial ones, I try to keep control of my data as much as possible by keeping backups, saving to JSON/log/database, using APIs, and so on.

Maybe we should post more runs to Mastodon? The problem is, I just don't have the time or energy to share every run on social media with all the details. Something always ends up missing.

The idiot president talks about bombing and "making waves" here and there, sends American SS-style forces into the streets to do harm (ICE, that is), and shows little regard for human life, other than his own. And when he does it, people cheer. Nobody does anything. We just sit by and watch?

It's devastating that he can do whatever he wants, even kill, abuse, rape, and destroy lives, and still get praised for it. The worst part is that his actions, and the influence of MAGA ideology, are now (and have been for a while) seeping into Finnish politics. The nationalist, anti-immigration Finns Party, one of the current ruling parties with 19.3% support (going down fast, thankfully), along with the right-wing leading National Coalition Party at 23%, are starting to echo the US Republican side, and it shows.

I'd like to think only a small portion of Finns feel that way, but I see it every day. It makes me sad and angry, even here, on the other side of the world.
