I would really like it if white Americans would stop fake begging other settler or colonialist countries to invade us.
-
European countries would never do that. The idea from some US leftists that they would invade the country that has the strongest armed forces, in order to save the USA from problems created by the USA, is so absurd. I wonder how they even came up with that?
Maybe they just love stories that go like "World War II, but the other way round, this time Germany will have to save us!"
But that's just speculation, I don't know where that weird idea even comes from...@Mab_813 @skinnylatte There are a lot of jokes about Canada getting new provinces. I'm not sure that would work out with the current US gun culture, though, I guess blue states do want sensible gun laws...

I would really like it if white Americans would stop fake begging other settler or colonialist countries to invade us. Yes, they have healthcare, but if you truly believe they have their shit together I have a bridge to sell you.
Do they have more of their shit together? Yes!
Will they treat nonwhite people better? Probably not. POC already have enough nonsense to deal with in this country we don’t need another country’s shit because you think it’ll be fun and sophisticated to be (some other country you like but have never been)
I highly encourage you to google all of these other countries you love so much with the terms ‘immigrants’ and ‘detention camp’ and ‘police violence’. All of you have the same shit. It’s not funny.
@skinnylatte I hear ya, but healthcare is pretty attractive...

@WildEyedBoyFromFreecloud they’re mostly all moving to to exclude healthcare from immigrants

@wtrmt @skinnylatte Yikes.

I walked along there once, but it was winter months, so likely meant it smelled better? It was definitely a beautiful area to walk.

@CStamp @wtrmt @skinnylatte It is. When it's warmer there are also pop-up bars along the river. It's nice but most rivers in big cities aren't very suitable for swimming.
-
@WildEyedBoyFromFreecloud most middle class UK citizens don’t even qualify to sponsor their foreign spouses to live there permanently. They’re not going to be any better to any other immigrant other than the ones who invest millions of dollars. This is happening across the world (limiting legal immigration, being inhumane to refugees and asylum seekers, and only opening doors for highly skilled and rich people)
-
So many people here are like, oh I wish I could move to (another country, that is also having a hard far right turn, and anti-immigrant horrors, just in a language they don’t speak)
It’s totally fine to feel you need to get away for safety and yes white cis Americans will likely face less of a threat in many places
However
I’m so irritated by the pretense that all of the current problems in the world are limited to US borders. We are going through a rough time of it.. but a lot of these problems are structurally global. ‘America is the worst’ is also a form of American exceptionalism.
@skinnylatte Trump is turning the States into another Israel. Netanyahu has trained him well. Worst part is that no one is stopping him or his whole corrupt administration!

@flauschtext @wtrmt @skinnylatte Sadly, that is a choice. Cleaning up rivers has a lot of benefits.

All of this reminds me of walking by the Seine with my wife, who grew up in Paris.
‘I bet all these American wine mom types on vacation are going say this is very romantic’
(1 min later)
‘Oh gosh, this is so romantic!!’
(Every five minutes later)
‘Oh wow, this is so romantic!!’
My wife, like any other Parisian: ‘the river is full of human and other feces’
@skinnylatte Both true!

You're assuming that if someone successfully invades your country, they will then give you access to the same healthcare system the citizens from back home have?
instead of "Well you lost the war, you actually have zero influence now and we will now do whatever we want"

@skinnylatte Lived in the UK, came back to the USA. We’re actively working on our exit back (to London). It’s not great, but still, much better. There’s work, there’s healthcare, there’s Europe… I should edit this to add, we have family connex in Czech Republic, and options for retiring in (undisclosed area) France, huddling with other disgruntled “expat” (immigrant) USians & Euros.

@skinnylatte we were at Chrissy Field (San Francisco, for people who don't know) for a charity walk, and as we were parking and getting our stuff organized we met a young couple who had recently moved here. They had come from a part of the country that is convinced that San Francisco was some kind of hellscape. Looking around at all the people, with strollers and dogs and frisbees, they asked, "is it like this all the time?" and, of course, we replied, "Yep. Pretty much." smiles all around.
-
@skinnylatte It's kind of wild because I'll see people be like "Oh, I wish we were like Australia" (please look up refugee/immigrant detainment facilities in Nauru) or "if only we were more like Europe" (where? but all of them are complicit in some fashion because Frontex, and a good chunk of them are full of overt fascists running the show).
And while I understand why it's happening, I also am just baffled by people from the US trying to make refugee cases in places... because most of these places still treat the US as a "safe" place (even when their politicians are saying it's not; the whole "the US is no longer safe" shit coming from a Euro politician is to score political points and obfuscate their own culpability and nothing else).
> Nauru
> Manus Island
> Christmas IslandAre the ones that were always in the news. Off shore processing is what they called it.

The train the US is riding right now leads to one place: Ideological, economic, tech, and military alignment with Russia.
If anyone thinks that eventuality isn't the death knell for free Europe, well....
smh.
The EU has a role in fighting against the rise of fascism. *Especially* in the US. There is no "going it alone". There is only realignment with China--yet another authoritarian regime.
Defeating nascent US fascism is an all-hands-on-deck-moment. Failure is not an option.

@flauschtext @CStamp @skinnylatte Santiago de Chile managed to clean up “El Mapocho” river. It is full of rocks and there’s no way for humans to swim in it, but the fauna came back: there are local species of fish and birds. The flora changes with the seasons. It is beautiful.
