I do not need to see that kind of shit, and you should think twice before sharing it with strangers without a content warning.

@cstross I'm sorry, but people need to see and be horrified by it. The Vietnam war ended because in part of the images broadcast on TV. The Afghan war dragged on because it was sanitized. Instead of complaining that you had to see it, maybe urge your representatives to defund and dismantle ICE. If you aren't American, urge your leaders to take action against my government.

@farbel I'm not a fucking American, I don't get a vote in this shit, I DO NOT NEED IT IN MY EYEBALLS. Go away until you've learned to read for context.

It is not okay to share your snuff videos with the whole world without a content warning. You are hurting people. Period.

@Remittancegirl I think the people who don't realize they're being damaged by this saturation coverage of atrocities are the ones receiving the most long-term harm.

@cstross Autoplay is annoying at the best of times. It is atrociously terrible at all other times.

The BBC seems to be pushing it too. Their headlines might be adequate warning, but they're also putting out stories about our politicians planning a "British FBI". I am wary of our bosses.

@cstross Just to be clear here, I think websites and apps just autoplaying content is not just an annoyance. It's an issue of consent. I want to be able to actively decide see which content I see and hear, and which content I don't. I should not be subjected to content I don't want to see or hear without me explicitly choosing (and with that, consenting) to do so.

@cstross In the rare instances I do choose to share extremely disturbing things, I don't even solely rely on CWs since many people - myself included - auto expand them. I'll make the URL unclickable so someone has to copy paste it if they want to see it. Surround it with backticks if your software supports markdown. Put a space in the URL. Something so only those who actually choose to see things that may haunt dreams see it.

@schrotthaufen @cstross It’s just another thing on the long list of awful, obviously wrong, definitely still illegal things which some techbro asshole did once, and which large numbers of people now do routinely.

@JessTheUnstill @cstross Yes! I see that a lot in infosec, too: Potentially malicious websites are often shared with [ ] around dots, like http://example[.]com/evil/site, to prevent accidental clicks.

@farbel @cstross The Vietnam War was 50 years ago. There was no media saturation, it was 15 years before CNN gave us that first glimpse of round-the-clock news everywhere.

                              You can't compare the two.

@cstross I don't disagree with the question for a CW.
Context matters etc. Still don't think 'snuff' is a correct description but that's maybe nitpicking a bit.

Gulf War 1, which pretty much "made" the 24×7 rolling news channel as a profitable business.
Ever since then, profits have been made by sharing (and therefore recording & editing) "snuff".
People follow the leads they're shown. "If," as another trope goes, "you can't see it, you can't be it."

Incidentally, yesterday's event(s) are why I ALWAYS switch off video autoplay in all browsers and social media apps and refuse to use TikTok or other video media platforms.

I do not need to see that kind of shit, and you should think twice before sharing it with strangers without a content warning.
