    Matrix: Constant technical difficulties, probably 80% of the troubleshooting of all the services I tried was for Matrix and I couldn't even really figure out why it wasn't working in the end. To make matters worse, I actually have experience with Matrix unlike most of the rest of this list
    Session: Looks kinda cool, maybe, but I only found one person to chat with on there
    Signal groupchats: It's fine, but obviously nowhere close to the features of Discord. But it's easy to use and quite good if what you want is actually a groupchat and not a Discord server
    Stoat: Looks cool, unfortunately their infrastructure cannot keep up with demand, like, at all, hopefully they can increase their capacity, but it's a pretty bad experience currently

    @november consider #Zulip, #RocketChat and #IRC + #JitsiMeet / #Mumble?

      @kkarhan Self-hosting would not be a good fit for my usecase, and IRC doesn't have message history, which makes it entirely useless. Any that don't run into those issues?

        @november well, #Zulip & #RocketChat are self-hosting capable and open-source.

        • I prefer the former over latter as I've setup it on multiple occasions. But UX is similar.

        • Same goes for #JitsiMeet over #Mumble.

          @kkarhan I'm specifically trying to *avoid* self-hosting

            @november you could get those as "managed hosting" options.

              @kkarhan Still wouldn't be what I'd want, see this post. It'd need to be something owned and operated by some other entity that can take on the legal responsibility

                @november sorry, but if you want to shed any liability, then not even Microsoft Teams will offer you that!

                  @kkarhan I mean I will make a reasonable effort to keep minors away, I just don't want the responsibility for what exactly counts as a reasonable effort in a legal sense to lie squarely on my shoulders. I just want a service someone else is hosting

                    @kkarhan Also I don't want the technical complications of self-hosting, either

                      @november then consider managed hosting which you can aldo get from Zulip (or whatever hoster of your choice offers that to you)...

                        @kkarhan Again, I don't want self-hosting or managed hosting, I want a service someone else is running that I can just join. If there's nothing that fits that, just stop making recommedations

                          @kkarhan@infosec.space @november@chaosfem.tw I ran RocketChat in our last company for little while, as well as MatterMost. It's only partially open-source, and is really designed for small companies, so it's more org focused then user based.
