@Crell copyright infringement is another capitalism thing. Also there are so many other industries that shouldn't be consuming the resources they do but everyone is very loud about scary new tool.
@av3ry3ris No deflection. Look at the article and the links. The power usage is massive.

@Crell I see the power usage. I'm wondering why anyone only cares about the environment when it comes to AI and not with coal, oil, electricity, Netflix, meta, tiktok, lithium batteries, meat etc. It feels like a talking point. If we care about the environment let's fix the environment and not place blame on scary tool. Right now companies can just buy anything they want and do anything they want. How is that AIs fault?

@av3ry3ris You're deliberately ignoring the point, and the supporting links in the article. Stop deflecting. I'm done here.

@Crell you're also ignoring my point. I see the power usage of the data centers and I agree they are bad but who is building them and why are they allowed to build more and more? I'm saying the only time we care about the environment is when it comes to AI. The planet has been dying for YEARS and this is the only time we care about it? I am asking why is it the fault of the tool that is abused for the purposes of facilitating capitalism and not the fault of capitalism itself.

It is not kind. You may well be insulted by it. If you are... then you really should question yourself.

Avery, you’re evidencing exactly the attitudes and behaviour that Larry is calling out. Take a long hard look at yourself! -

Avery, you’re evidencing exactly the attitudes and behaviour that Larry is calling out. Take a long hard look at yourself!@KimSJ @Crell idk I mean this article didnt really present anything new. Just kind of whining about peoples tech jobs and then using the environmental talking point to "prove" AI bad. AI is not bad. It is being misused heavily I will agree. But the tool itself isn't bad. People said the same thing about the internet. Growing up people told me how inaccurate Wikipedia was but now all the sudden it is way better than AI. Both still able to have incorrect info. But AI bad. Sure yeah.

OK, fair point. But AI is the problems of capitalism writ large, and any engineer/programmer buying into the hype is making things worse. That’s the message I took from the OP, and that is a message worth amplifying. -

If we want to talk about actual problems with AI let's talk about things like ShellGPT and flock cameras, and ICE's AI facial recognition tool. Not people getting their work done faster so they can enjoy life.

@Crell I hope that we forgive each other at some point, because this is the only way we can hope to make society again. Dividing us so we have to be selfish is part of the issue/plan. Selfishness itself is a feature, not an accident.

@jdbar Forgiveness only comes after accountability.
And it is accountability that is sorely lacking in modern America.

A closely related post that describes the dynamic im talking about more succinctly.
Theyre talking privacy, I'm talking AI, but the same logic applies to both and many more topics.

@Crell I am thinking that "vote with your dollars" is not a lie, if we get that some people have much much more money than others. We have to join the club to influence the elections. Just a few billions ahead !

@jdbar Even dollars have to content with the network effect.
But yes, "one dollar one vote" is what the Supreme Court has given us, and it's a recipe for oligarchy.
