@ascentale @realSiegfried @MarkBrigham @Trailanderror @bikenite #BikeNite A5. "Person who uses a bicycle"
(mostly, because "cyclist" here implies an athletic cycling enthusiast and spandex)

It depends on the circumstances. When someone is asking the question as if they want to know my profession, rather than saying I'm retired, I say that I am a " full-time recreational cyclist."
In an advocacy role I am a person who travels via a bicycle. I sometimes get called an "avid cyclist" (most recently by the local press) but avoid that if I can. -

@ascentale @realSiegfried @MarkBrigham @Trailanderror @bikenite A5: honestly I've kind of struggled with it because too many options sound like motorcycle. I do say "Bike first," sometimes.

@josh @ascentale @realSiegfried @MarkBrigham @Trailanderror @bikenite #bikenite a5 Upon due consideration... "Devoted cyclist" is what I opted for when somebody suggested "serious cyclist."
Devoted steers away from the competitive spin on things.
That said, usually I'm just Sue JOnes. It doesn't take much to be a local character in Illinois

Or "everywhere all the time" cyclist, because a lot of the cyclists I know are either recreational or commuter cyclists who default to cars outside of the niche they cycle in.

@ascentale @realSiegfried @MarkBrigham @Trailanderror @bikenite A5. Analogue biker, so as not to be confused with motorcyclists. Riding can be rough where I am, and folx are considered unstable/wild for doing it. IMHO 'cycling' implies a level of civility and healthiness I don't often see.

If someone asks if I'm a cyclist, I'll answer yes.

A5b. I pointed out at my first Bicycle and Safety Committee decades ago, that "Bicycle" should replace most uses of "Cycle" and "Bike" because people generally thought of motorcycle with those terms. I found out later some people in the Cycling club weren't too happy about my comment.

@realSiegfried @MarkBrigham @Trailanderror @bikenite A5. I don't have a great answer. "People riding bikes" or similar is probably what I use the most but it is a lot more syllables. So "person who rides a bike"?
It's weird to hear how you are perceived sometimes. There's a protected lane I sometimes ride and there are often people walking in it. I try to be as polite as possible while letting them know I'm riding, which usually involves a bell ding or a "hello".. or if in the evening, they might see a headlight.
Usually if they're trying to get someone else out of the way, they say "watch out, biker" or "watch out, bike". Feels a little weird to be referred to as the object you are riding on but I guess I get it, and I'd refer to a car the same way.

@cainmark @ascentale @realSiegfried @MarkBrigham @Trailanderror @bikenite I've definitely found that with "bike", but mostly online. I don't know if I've ever heard "cycle" refer to motorcycles before.
