The US is threatening #Canada (again) if we don't buy their F-35s.

@RichRARobi @elasticsoul Buy what exactly? There is no European stealth fighter jet. It will take decades until FCAS is ready for deployment, and it's unclear if FCAS will have any meaningful stealth capabilities.
Much as I hate the very idea of drone warfare, drones used by and against #ukraine are causing more injuries than any other type of weapon.
A drone can stop a tank, sink a warship, or a submarine, destroy a bunker.Unfortunately drones are the future.

The US is threatening #Canada (again) if we don't buy their F-35s. Here's what Denmark said about the ones they bought, and regret buying:
"They're in for repairs about half the time or even more," he said, "so the Americans have all the power of actually destroying our air force just by shutting down [parts] supplies."

@elasticsoul We should not buy shit from USA. Zero trust.
-
@elasticsoul I think the word for that would be “extortion“
@DanadasGrau @elasticsoul

@elasticsoul perhaps US engineers should vacation in Denmark and help the Danes work on a plan for engineering and building their own parts plants for those airframes. I'm going to adjust a thought. I bet those engineers all have passports.

@elasticsoul That was always the point. It's a basic part of their war fighting strategy.

We shouldn't buy any equipment from them
-
@Ravonges @elasticsoul but, you were lol You can rent the airplane as a service, but you don't actually own it unless you can fix it without permission
@whatzaname @Ravonges @elasticsoul and that’s assuming there isn’t a built in kill code that can brick them. The most advanced fighter in the world loses every time when it can’t take off.

Sore losers is what you would call people like that. And for sure this is what Donald J. Trump is, a sore loser…
Oh, and a convicted felon.

@elasticsoul Are you guys *still *grumpy about the CF-105?
Looks like your choices are work with the French coalition on FCAS or work with the Brits on GCAP.

@elasticsoul @EricLawton Warning of “consequences to the defence pact” sounds exactly like gangster language. The US now only operates with threats and ‘preemptive’ strikes. Canada should think carefully about buying any equipment from a seller that can and will disable it at will.
-
@RichRARobi @elasticsoul So, fighter jets clearly cannot be replaced by drones, but even F-16s and MiGs must keep away from the front lines in order to avoid being shot down themselves. This also limits the range of air-launched Ukrainian cruise missiles dramatically.
If we provided stealth fighter jets to Ukraine, they could avoid russian air defence without problems, potentially even flying into russian airspace. The US' strike on Iran was conducted entirely with stealth fighter jets and long-range stealth bombers and would not have been possible with conventional aircraft.
Ukraine needs that capability to destroy russian air bases; and Europe needs it to maintain its air superiority if russia attacks.

@elasticsoul We need to Run from the F35 and go with the Gripen . The Americans can go and play with themselves. I feel sorry for Denmark buying US crap.

@elasticsoul check out the film Nae Pasarán when Scottish Rolls-Royce engineers refused to repair the dictator Pinochet’s fighter jets.
-
@Rickd6 @elasticsoul the UK is so stupid they have nuclear arms which can only be used with the permission of the US. And to add insult to injury Scotland is in the front line because we are the base for these missiles.

@wbpeckham @elasticsoul I would still steer clear. All these aircraft need is a back door on the computer management systems and they could all be rendered completely useless by a keyboard in Kentucky

Fair point, I had a quick look on interweb, and nearest are possibly the Rafale, or Typhoon, there are some others. None are stealth, but have to note that with external ordnance, neither is f-35
It is probably the big bomber that is really stealth, and all we have is an ancient Lancaster !! They might just not shoot it down out of surprise!
Cruise missiles needed? Ukraine are clever, how about a locally grown cardboard stealth cruise missile?

@RichRARobi @elasticsoul I think the German TAURUS cruise missile is somewhat stealthy (not entirely sure). Though, for cruise missiles, flying low and adapting the flight path (like TAURUS does) may already be sufficient to avoid air defence

@elasticsoul @dyckron well, let's get one or two so we can reverse engineer it and build a more competent version. The rest should be returned to sender.
-
So, nothing in the article about how much one of these damn things costs.
I'm willing to bet you could make a lot of drones for the cost of one of these. Seems like Ukraine is currently showing the world what war looks like in the coming decades and a fleet of complex, expensive, high-maintenance airplanes ain't it.
Canada, don't listen to the US government. They're all liars. Shit-can this overpriced example of the last century's tech.
@troy_frizzell @elasticsoul Filling the border with a cloud of dual-role drones, that can be used as artificial bird-strikes loaded with jagged tungsten crusty-os, or air-to-ground mobile claymores can be done for a fraction of the cost of a hangar full of dead F-35s.

@elasticsoul A usa kill switch doesn't have to be an actual switch in washington for it to work equally well. Canada needs to buy the Swedish Grippen and get rid of the usa Aegis fire control system for our new naval ships if we want to escape vassalage
