@rainynight65 I'm OMW out to get an ultrasonic cleaner right now. To date, I just store them in a clean, dry place. I oil some if I can do so without ruining the markings on them.

@joykill @lianna @alice I don’t want a coffee mug upside the head, so I decline to argue further.

My girlfriend and I went out yesterday to steal love locks, then went to get some warm food and drinks afterwards (it was friggin' cold).

We ended up with 28 new love locksΒΉ, a cinnamon roll the size of a large hedgehog, and chai I had to strain through my teeth.

All and all, it was a beautiful day and a lovely experience...though next time I hope they pour the chai through a strainer πŸ˜…

ΒΉI went for easier prey because, from the time I pulled my hands out of my pockets, I had about 30 seconds of poking icy metal before my fingers went numb.

@alice I'd like a cinnamon roll the size of a large hedgehog. I would also accept an actual large hedgehog

@alice Oh my, your lock posts prompt me to share this story: Years ago, on my bike commute, I saw an open padlock on the ground. I picked it up mostly so no one would ride over it, then impulsively slapped it onto a wire fence along the bike path a few miles down the road and locked it. To this day, I still see it on my commute (photo taken today). Perhaps not quite a love lock. But if you’re ever in the Santa Barbara area, I know a place where your skillz can be applied.

@gb0n that one looks like it's holding up pretty nicely; I'm curious what the core looks like!

In Seattle (at least right near the ocean where love locks are typically placed) *most* locks don't last longer than a few months before they seize up from rust.

@alice This one lives exactly one mile from the closest oceanfront. It has to have been at least 2 years. Probably more like 3 years.

@alice @gb0n Almost certainly for multiple companies/agencies who need access. I've seen even longer chains of locks on roads leading to hilltop radio tower sites.

Seeing those locks and their β€˜quality’, this may be cheaper than the same length of chain.

@gb0n @alice Yep, these are called β€œcommunity chains” or β€œdaisy chain locks.” They allow multiple people to have their own key for access. I’ve seen them used on gates to private forest lands for camping/hunting/fishing access in the Pacific Northwest my whole life. The main problem is that it only takes one person with a key to allow another person to join the chain.

@alice Thanks for the laugh β€” much appreciated on a day that was otherwise challenging, flat tire included (long story). At least I got a hike in.

@gb0n @alice I presume it’s set up to allow multiple people to unlock the gate without sharing keys.

@michaelgemar yup. It's a shared custody setup. Anyone can get in by opening their own lock, but it's still nominally more secure than not locking it at all.
