Below, Robert Kagen, says (to Carole Cadwalladr) something that confirms what many of us have been saying:

'it's just a faulty analysis to think that if you can flatter Trump enough & call him daddy, that means he'll leave you alone. As we see, he's not leaving anybody alone. It's really just – in fact, with him, it's an invitation to come back & demand something else & push you around. So you can't buy anything in that way'!

    Keir needs to listen!

@ChrisMayLA6 Even more worrying to me is the fact that many people fail to understand: that the period since 1945 has been an exceptional moment in human history during which people's rights have at least been recognized and, in many countries, exercised. This could disappear again for many decades or even centuries.

Trump is a totalitarian fascist asshole (I know it’s a little bit of overlap, but whatever).

He’s no different than Putin. These people only respect power. The best way to go after Trump is to go after the billionaires who finance him and to pull the plug on laws that benefit big tech like the right to repair and the right to reverse engineer.

Those rights by the way are integral to the concept of private property.. you know that sort of market/capitalism thing.

@ChrisMayLA6 Mary Trump, Donald's own niece, warned everyone back in 2020.

Knowing that, armed with what Anu Bradford broke down for everyone in Digital Empires back in 2023, people still handed him the keys!

@ChrisMayLA6 it would take Trump a maximum of 3 meetings to turn the UK off. US companies are ingrained in UK society at every level, and he has them on a leash.
            Starmer knows this.

I've often thought that the abolition of intellectual property laws which would have little negative impact on the general population would make a lot of very rich people very annoyed.

The length of patents and copyrights certainly need to be shortened. The ability to obtain patents for only nominal improvements, if any, to existing patented products should be reduced or eliminated.

@cmthiede @ChrisMayLA6 whole documentaries were made on the subject, then the trump organization threatened the filmmaker to suppress its release.

                      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump:_What%27s_the_Deal%3F

I mean if you just grew up in the 1980s, you already knew how bad trump was, without any deep dives into his history. He is open about it. This doc really demonstrates trump's mafia-style management, and how he uses underlings to buffer himself from criminality, throwing them under the bus.

Cory Doctorow’s barnstormer speech about pulling the plug on right to repair and reverse engineer criminalization is an essential public policy, listening or reading, depending on if you can get the transcript.

It’s a matter of national security for every nation. These laws that prevent the right to repair the reverse engineer destroy property rights.

                        No one should tolerate it

Then he tried to assassinate those 5 innocent young black kids! He took out a NYTimes front page ad, condemning them as rapists and murderers when they were all innocent! They were exonerated later....

To get back to your point here: absolutely.

The original term is 17 years at least in the US has been distorted all out of proportion. Copyright two has been distorted all out of proportion.

In particular, I think software patterns should not be as long as 17 years.

But a chief impediment to property rights and to the kind of reverse engine engineering/Tinkering that is prevented by trade law now is an impediment to technological advancement

@ChrisMayLA6 Authoritarians are actually provoked into attacking, when you ”try to give them what they want”

@ChrisMayLA6 I'd love to watch a panel of historians talk through this. Especially, if this one in Wisconsin is invited. Bias seems to have no bounds.

Can someone please inform Mark Rutte (former #VVD now #NATO boss) of this insight? He's got his head so far up Frump's ass that it's starting to make me feel sick...

I've often thought that the abolition of intellectual property laws which would have little negative impact on the general population would make a lot of very rich people very annoyed.

Have you read the work of @pluralistic on this? We may have a prefect opportunity to abolish the EU implementation of the #DCMA We could make it legal again to circumvent DRM. That would severely annoy some rich fucks and make the (digital) world a safer place. Win win!

@ChrisMayLA6 "one of the things which most alarms me, because it's my special area of interest – is that the British government has undertaken massive deals with US tech companies. This came out of that state visit. It includes – two weeks ago, I think it was – Britain signing a £240m deal to put Palantir in the middle of our armed forces, our Ministry of Defence. It just seems like total madness to have a Trump ally literally in our defence infrastructure."
