@thecrawford you can get old second-hand dell optiplexes (and other desktops), some of which even support coreboot/libreboot for that price (I got an optiplex 5050 SFF for £30 and ported to coreboot to it, which would be more than powerful enough for that)

@benpateThe question is 'who needs a datacenter?'.Maybe a huge company, but small businesses can go with 2 nas, vpn and a website+mail hosted somewhere.Any brand nas (synology, qnap, younameit) has the apps the average J needs for photo and storage, they provide vpn too.Datacenters are not a *requirement* at all.HA, complex disaster recovery, scalable resources, are needs for a very specific, limited, small number of businesses. @roughnecks

@jools Bei mir würde ich das wirklich nur auf Immich beschränken. So dassmein Smartphone jederzeit Photos automatisch synchronisiert. Wenn ich mal Dateien von Nextcloud bräuchte oder auf die geplante Homeassistant Instanz zugreifen möchte würde ich das per VPN Verbindung machen.

@fraggle fully agree. Decentralization is not a cure-all, it is not for everyone, and there is a high likelihood of losing data. Still, personally, I would not trade it for anything else, I selfhost everything I can

The issue is a lot more pronounced for Mastodon users than say Pleroma & forks and Soapbox. You won't catch every post ever made, but for the most part it is much more complete than with Mastodon. That seems to narrow it down a fair bit from being an ActivityPub issue to more likely being an issue with the #Mastodon stack itself.CC: @Gargron@mastodon.social@crow@irlqt.net
