(I hate to hear that instances shut down without notice)
how much do you guys charge to host an instance?, i had to close my old instance of 23 people [we where slowly growing] since the host just up and closed it doors on us

I very much appreciate hosters of instances. But with big power comes big responsibility. Announcing shutting down in advance just come with the job
@kubofhromoslav the admins are aware of this and so far I've never seen an example where they really had a choice and chose not to give warning. It's usually a tech failure that they had no control over and no warning of themselves

@raphaelmorgan @kubofhromoslav there is a small ego problem. Admins don’t want to hand over “their baby”.

@shlee @PostersUnionAU thank you. I wish our former admin had bothered to reach out before shutting down med-mastodon, or accepted offers made since to take it over for a month.

I'm hopeful one of us that have offered can pick the site up before the data is deleted by the host so folks don't loose post history and follower / following relationships.

In my organisation #VikimedioEO we have experienced that our "trusty" partner @tejoesperanto suddenly shut down their project management tool @openproject, that they have been providing for wide #Esperanto community, without warning or transfer of data. It was their skill issue - the board failed to implement the previous plan of finding new maintainers, even failed to announce searching for them
