    Controlling the #brain with light earns a #physiology #Nobel
    #NobelPrize in Physiology or #Medicine rewards —Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel—who developed our ability to activate and shut down #neurons in brain. Starting from studies of algae that are attracted to light, these and many other researchers built entire field of study that we now call #optogenetics: using light to alter the behavior of nerve cells marked by the activity of individual #genes.

      @BenjaminHCCarr

      For a moment I was hoping I could shine a torch or a laser at people to control them. Was already thinking about some possible applications. Alas --- it turns out it's more complicated. <sad face>
