A Hebrew newspaper reports that US sanctions, inflation, currency shortages, and the costs of war have exacerbated Iran's pharmaceutical crisis. Shortages affect approximately 800 types of medication—ranging from drugs for cancer, heart conditions, and migraines to insulin, antidepressants, and prenatal medications. Some cancer patients have even been forced to sell household belongings to afford their medication.
More than 18,000 private pharmacies are owed approximately 800 trillion rials (roughly $300 million) by insurance companies, leaving many patients compelled to pay for their medication out of pocket. Although Iran produces over 97% of its pharmaceutical volume domestically, it remains dependent on imports for raw materials, equipment, technology, and specialized drugs.
My notes:
During the 40 days war, several major pharmaceutical companies across Iran were bombed by Israel and US including Pasteur institute, the oldest vaccine manufacturing facility in west Asia, active over 100 years . -
