NEW | Gazans Struggle to Survive Amid Economic Ruin and Ongoing Siege - The Guardian
Every morning, 23-year-old Mansour Mohammad Bakr walks past Gaza’s shoreline, the same sea that once sustained his family for generations. Before Israel’s genocide on Gaza, Bakr worked as a fisherman alongside his father and brothers.
His brothers were killed, his boat destroyed, and his trade suffocated by bombardment and Israeli maritime restrictions. Like hundreds of thousands across the Strip, he is left searching for work in an economy that has collapsed.
Survival in Gaza still requires cash, something most no longer have. Food distributions provide basic staples, but essentials like fresh produce, transportation, clothing, electricity charging, and medicine remain out of reach. With unemployment hovering around 80% and Gaza’s economy reduced to a fraction of its former size, even experienced workers and university graduates cannot find jobs.
The genocide has obliterated Gaza’s infrastructure, fishing industry, agriculture, and markets, plunging GDP per capita to one of the lowest levels globally.
