Jonas used to ask a very similar question shortly after the Holocaust.
But while Jonas focused on the theological implications of a genocide (how a loving God could ever allow that to happen, and how religion dogmas themselves need to either adapt or be dropped in the face of such suffering), the author stressed on it societal impact (how a society that could witness this in silence can remain unchanged).
