@astro_jcm I am a Tolkien purist and I have Opinions ;-).
On your first read, you can skip the first five chapters, especially if you've seen the films and know the general lay of the land. On your subsequent reads (of which there will be many), go back and hit the first quarter of book 1.

When encountering people who haven't read the trilogy, I often suggest starting at chapter 6 of Fellowship when JRRT finally figures out what kind of book he's writing / things get moving / it's not just a lot of geneology and soap opera.

@rvaughnmd There are so many bad IPAs out there. I like hops, but the key is not just adding a metric ton of them and calling it an IPA.
