I'd swap cats and dogs with dogs and cats; cats replace dogs in all dog things and vice versa. Mostly just because I think it would be neat to have the same kind of diversity of cat breeds that we do of dogs. Big shaggy cats, tiny cats with big heads, long skinny cats, black cats with orange eyebrows...
I don't really have as much justification for swapping dogs in for cats, but it seemed fair if they are being replaced by cats that they could still have a place in people's homes.

@alice so many people are concerned about fairness in the sense of not letting someone else get more than they "deserve" that they don't look at fairness in the sense of ensuring that everybody has enough.
This became a big thing at my previous job. There was a meeting of essentially the whole program I was on. Way bigger than it needed to be, so most of us were just spectators. I don't remember what issue they were trying to solve, but a woman made a suggestion, it was ignored, a little later a man repeated the suggestion, and it was taken seriously. The most notable thing about this incident is that another woman called it out in the same meeting, and that actually started a good discussion. Of course, afterwards a bunch of guys were rolling their eyes and saying "oh, I guess we have to be careful what we say now." I was not out at work at that time, so there was an extra layer of discomfort for me. But the fact that this happened and was called out publicly among the higher levels of the company seemed to empower women there to speak up more.
@alice I really get that amount of work thing, especially looking at man / woman couples¹ where you can see them side by side, and it is clear that she is putting in work and he really isn't.
