Neat experience! (I mean, annoying, as well, but useful for a story.)
I did look up a bunch of websites about "the most common problems" and have a load of stuff to use.
I'm postulating that many houses are run down and have been fixed by non-experts, because the alpha has been siphoning off money.

Wrote 600 words for the Wolves. Ellie is still in the briefing, but it's winding down.
Also looked up what kind of trouble is common with electric installations, so I have stuff that Ellie can find and repair.
I hope I can make her sound like she's good at her job.
I'm trying out Obsidian for notes, and it's working really well.

And yes, part of the discovery are really surprising twists that flow out of my fingers quite unexpectedly.
West flinging himself into the harbor was one of those. I stared at that page for a while.
I tried plotting out stories, and they died on the vine. No energy, no curiosity, no fun.
So now I hand over the reins to Writer Brain and let it do its thing. It took a while to develop that trust, but by now it really works.
What's your process like? More specifically, are your stories (at least in terms of overall arcs) mostly formed already when you start writing, or do they grow into shape during the writing taking twists and turns you as author did not expect?
I like to call myself a plantser.
That means, I usually know the beginning and the end, i.e. what I'm writing towards.
Everything else is something I discover when I write the story. I need the discovery.

Just pointing out here that ICE are not respecting any laws, have been promised total immunity and ARE searching everything without bothering with warrants.
The entire US government is blithely ignoring the law as well as court decisions, and threatening any tech that resists them.
You do not give an authoritarian state extra eyes. Ever. Not even if it's a mere possibility.

Did a task today that was very difficult to me (but required by German law).
It was harder because I was still in overwhelm from last night, but the lovely lady at the post shop was kind and helpful and also kept her voice low.
I even managed to get a few groceries afterwards, despite feeling immensely frazzled. The walk home helped, at least.
No writing today. But that's okay. The big task was enough.
