@trashpandaqc I self host the Matrix instance, so as admin am not very concerned but am aware of those issues. These are small, tight-knit communities I'm hosting.

I agree about Signal and it's my preferred method of one-on-one conversations with friends and a few group chats with those same friends. The problem with Signal is it doesn't have close parity with Discord features, and I shit you not, people get scared when I suggest Signal because "only drug dealers and terrorists use it." [1/2]

@trashpandaqc For the communities I run I'm trying to think of a transitional solution involving protocol bridges. Right now I have one working for Matrix<->Discord and plan to get one going for Matrix<->Stoat and Stoat<->Discord.

Trying to meet folks where they are at and give them space/time to get out (since in my experience most people are scared/werided out by non-corporate platforms, even lefties)

Am I remembering wrong? Didn't user accounts used to show up if they start to match what you are searching for in the drop bar here on Masto Web? I've noticed since upgrading to v4.5.6 it no longer works in the web (but still works on the main mobile app)

I've been considering building something that allows IG stories rip and upload to a private loops account, and just use that to keep up on friends gigs without having to login to IG.

I'm really enjoying NodeBB. For me it's like a nice alternative to Mastodon's Bookmarks feature. Instead of having posts I want saved in some long list, I can easily sort in NodeBB by the categories on my board when I add the posts.

It also works as a nice alternative to lists for Mastodon. Mastodon only allows accounts added to lists if you already follow them. So with NodeBB, I can subscribe categories to accounts then use those as my lists instead.

Love it.

@dansup If you're seriously considering moving to that type of format, I've found @nodebb to be quite lightweight and easy to install and launch. I did have some initial federation issues but that ended up being my own fault.

On production machines I rarely touch root space with containers. I tend to keep as much in user as humanly possible in order to keep root mostly safe- even running a lot of systemd services as user.

I've noticed a lot of projects assume root being used (i.e. /srv) and expect root ownership, leading to a total permissions hellscape if you're from an opposite perspective.

My question is what causes a project to decide on root vs user?

I still use IRC off-and-on but never kept up with protocol updates. Plus I use Polari on Gnome so I'm guessing they have restricted a lot of these features for the sake of minimalism.
