@rasmus91 Unfortunately, the ESA -- the company that represents the video game industry's interests -- are constantly lobbying against anything like this ever happening.
Oh, and Nintendo unsurprisingly funds a lot of the lobbying against libraries and archives being able to legally distribute games...
87% of video games released in the U.S. before 2010 are technically unavailable for legal purchase.
As of 2026, libraries and archives can digitally preserve, but not digitally *share* games, and can provide on-premises access only. Libraries *are* allowed to share books, films, and music both onsite and remotely.
This is all very messed up.
@flwwhtrbt Honestly, that's a bummer. There's still a fairly tall barrier to entry for quote/unquote normal users. Also, when I worked at Thunderbird, I can't tell you how many times we all ended up on Slack (our backup) because the Matrix instance was either down or not syncing or otherwise borked.
Not to mention using it on multiple devices can be a serious pain point.
@myTerminal That's heartbreakingly true, and as someone who has built and managed many communities, I totally get it. It just sucks because the communities get more and more fragmented.

I know this #Discord nonsense has a lot of people searching for alternatives (like Matrix, Stoat, etc), and those alternatives have a chance to shine right now. BUT we need to go back to discussions and knowledge being searchable on the open web!

Earlier this week, Dave2D (a YouTuber with 3+million subscribers) declared Windows is ruining new laptops. Now Austin Evans (5.7million subscribers) is boosting the signal.
And that signal is getting pretty strong, folks. Basically, mainstream YouTube is now recommending Linux to a LOT of people.
