@artemis The issue of a powerful man allegedly having a me too problem instead of a sexual harassment problem, a misogyny problem, a workplace discrimination problem, etc really gets to me. It redirects the attention to the targets of the behavior for having dared speak about it and potentially harmed an otherwise promising man's career rather than him for having behaved badly or failed to control his male employees' bad behavior.

@artemis I'm saying that in a way the phrase "me too" has been captured in the backlash and used to trivialize the underlying conversation. Not sure how better to explain it other than when you hear certain men discuss "me too" in verbal conversation, there's quite a dismissive tone to their voice that makes clear the whole conversation is being trivialized as just a silly little women's trend. I don't know how to better describe it, but I think some defense/careful use of the phrase is needed.

@artemis I find it quite disturbing how the phrase "a MeToo problem" has been adopted by male supremacists to trivialize sexual harassment and assault allegations and failures of leaders to ensure safe environments in their workplaces. For example, a politician being described as having "a MeToo problem" because he covered for a senior male aide who had been sexually harassing multiple staffers in his campaign &/or administration.

@artemis I'm not saying that's what it is, just that the phrase "#MeToo movement" has been used to trivialize what happened, erasing years of Tarana Burke's work before white women adopted the hashtag and minimizing the relevance of what was shared. I didn't experience the 2017 public discourse as different in content from conversations I knew had been going on since well before I was born, just different in scale because the dynamics of social media facilitated rapid spread.

@artemis I think we need to stop letting powerful men trivialize any and all pushback against their misogynistic abuses by pigeonholing it as "the #MeToo movement"... a hashtag, a trend, something for unserious aka young and female people. People have been fighting back against sexual abuse and other sexism forever with or without hashtags. Like with other social movements, social media had a moment of being democratizing & helping people find their voices, but that's wildly overemphasized.

@beecycling @jon And Zuckerberg would never be motivated to target people who have offended the dictator in his pursuit of the next tax break, regulatory change, or disruption of a lawsuit that threatens his empire.

@jon But they apparently plan to also do it with users who have abandoned or taken a break from their accounts. At least if you're dead, people can pretty easily verify that the AI slop is not you.

@benlockwood In fact, believing that there are exactly two sides to every issue and that in most cases those sides are represented by Democrats and Republicans is utterly disqualifying from being a journalist as it demonstrates a complete lack of critical thinking and intellectual curiosity.

@anneapplebaum But hey, white male supremacists in Hungary can feel good about themselves even if they're struggling to make ends meet because their fellow working people without white male privilege are being punished even more than they are. That's the most anyone outside the 1% ever gets from supporting fascism.

@Natasha_Jay Is this just about women or does it also recognize trans men and non-binary people? Why would women be separated out like this?

@QasimRashid If this doesn't prove to women that complying with patriarchy (in this case, by marrying and taking husbands' names) to avoid conflict and be granted limited privileges is a really bad plan, I don't know what will.

@vkc How in the hell can these jackasses accuse you of encouraging marriage proposals from strangers? Literally the only way a person could encourage such bizarre behavior would be to say, "hey, I want to be married but I'm not in a relationship. Would someone please propose to me?"
