There also nothing stopping you having more than one account for different uses. Have a public account and a locked down account and one for shit posting. Have them on separate instance if you want.
Apps let you quickly flip between accounts.

How do folks manage the balance between having a more private social media experience with the fediverse versus a fully public one? -

Another option is be anonymous.Using real names on the internet wasn't really a thing before Facebook.
While it doesn't restrict who sees and responds, it allows you to post your thoughts and feelings, without it getting back to people you know in real life and causing problems.
It also gives you control over who you share your real identity with.

Might get banned from the #forkiverse for this, but I think I need the Algorithm. If someone seems knowledge or interesting. See who they follow or followers them. Then scroll though a few posts.
Search for the Fedifollows account. They puts out hand crafted lists of interesting people by topic.
They and others have mastodon directories and starter packs. Google will find them.
Have a look at the different. live feeds and trending.

Might get banned from the #forkiverse for this, but I think I need the Algorithm.Who to follow?
Try searching a bunch of hastags of topics you are interested in.
You can also follow hastags here.
Do a introduction post and include that as a hastag.
Follow the introduction hastag
Follow lots of people. A few hundred at least to get your home timeline buzzing.
Take a punt on topics you know nothing about. It can be a interesting way to learn. I recognised and got fixed a security vulnerability at work, by reading posts bt infosec people here.

i need the fediverse explained a bit more to me.Imagine following a Facebook group, from Twitter.
Or someone using Reddit to reply to a Instagram post or Tumblr.
Imagine twitter was not run by a company to make money but by people who just loved it.
Imagine if there wasn't just one twitter like above. but thousands of them. With their own rules, running off donations or generosity of their owners.
Imagine being able to be able to run a twitter on that old computer in your spare room.
