  • Today we're sharing the first in a series of three posts from our leadership team, starting with @mellifluousbox discussing our mission, and priorities for 2026.

@ariarhythmic @benroyce @starlily Great, fascism will make good Mastodon instances have the same status as BitTorrent trackers and pirate streaming websites!

Well, the tracker I used to contribute for is still up even today, thus we may think disobedience is fine, they will not go for small instances. On the other hand, it's a false correlation: one thing is Crunchyroll, Netflix and other companies choosing not to go against small groups because they may die out of just from not getting enough donations, other thing is fascist governments. They are already going against individuals, people fear ICE, as an example.

  • #poll for all you beautiful hard working professional computer touchers out there:

@aeva it depends on what my clients do with the buildings I plan. in most cases I hope good things are being done in those places, like children learning and people having homes. at the same time, I have no idea if some of the money from those buildings are going to corruption. well, one of my clients got into the most well known newscast in the country. a building I designed was shown to millions… in a corruption scandal news report

  • PS. With all the Discord stuff, in case you wonder why you never see me promoting Matrix, it’s not because it’s a usability nightmare (which it is) but because it’s made by the kind of people who’d be happy to call ICE a customer.

@zzt @Tamtam @aral There are some people working on adding E2EE to Mastodon, but, as far as I read about it, it will be like having Signal but decentralised and with better UX but lacking voice/video calls (so, Mastodon but your instance owner can't read your private messages and you don't need to verify codes or qr codes like Signal).

They are taking their time because once deployed it will be hard to fix things. I know that from experience developing megajs!!! I wish they didn't use RSA — non-standard RSA even, is a pain in the ass to work with — for authentication. Why not Ed25519 which has smaller keys or a post-quantum scheme?! I wish Matrix development was done like Mastodon's E2EE.

@LukefromDC @aral I am still waiting for Mastodon to have E2EE support.

@dansup Matrix crypto is bad. There are so many people recommending Signal alternatives with BAD cryptography just because it's not federated (some are even Signal forks with removed security features! ) that makes me urge two things:

One: pressure Signal into becoming federated.

Two: make people aware that there are plans to add E2EE to Mastodon and, IMHO, it will be better than Signal in some parts (e.g. on Signal you have to check safety numbers to see if no one is tampering with your connection, on Mastodon it will be automatic, like WhatsApp, but open-source, unlike WhatsApp).

@briankrebs And, while we are here talking about email, a coworker suggested that I use Outlook. Which alternative exists which is not backed by Mozilla and supports Windows and HTML mail? If there isn't one, I guess I will have to use Thunderbird.

@briankrebs I just disabled the smart features entirely. No, smart folder organization isn't a thing I want, it is why I disabled it in the first place. I'm sure Google is using my messages to train their models anyway, but I don't want to get bothered by all this fuzz.

  • Are we all millenials here or is that a misperception?

@thordis Is it the new horoscope? I never thought hard about this and mostly ignored a psychology teacher that tried to teach this. I don't have any idea of my "sign".

Edit: I mean that the idea of using a US-focused terminology (e.g. the huge "baby boomers" post-war baby surge didn't happen here, as we weren't as involved in the war as the USA was — and I even checked data for that!) makes it look like a horoscope to me rather than a serious thing.
