    I agree that putting a number to it is a good idea otherwise just proposing a wealth tax will inevitably be used to fear monger amoung the working class that 'Avi's going to steal your hard earned savings!'

    For reference Statistics Canada table 36-10-0660-01 shows that the Highest wealth quintile had an average net worth of $12,047,197 in Q3 of 2025

    I still think the best option is for the Federal Government to create a crown corporation building EV's and selling them domestically at cost... it guarantees jobs in Canada and it makes EV's cheap in Canada (since the crown corporation can be mandated to produce non-luxury EV's).

    Plus the total cost would be a fraction of what was spent on TMX with significantly more benefits for Canadians.

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again... it should be illegal for a politician to lie, both while campaigning (including de facto campaigns that occur outside of official election campaigns) and when acting in any official capacity.

    I've said it before and I'll say it again... it should be illegal for a politician to lie, both while campaigning (including de facto campaigns that occur outside of official election campaigns) and when acting in any official capacity. I'm not a fan of the concept of jail as punishment but I'll make an exception for lying politicians.

  • As Canada cuts back on core critical services, Food Inspection, Agriculture it continues to set itself up for a costly and vulnerable dependence om Microsoft Office.

    The $940 million over 7 years the government is paying Microsoft would pay the salaries of over 1,000 software developers (assuming an average rate of pay equal to the median rate of pay for a software developer in Canada... A 1,000 developers would be more than sufficient to move the entire Federal Government to open-source software customised to meet the government's needs

    I've gone with Proton for now... It's not Canadian unfortunately but at least it's run by a non-profit in Europe (i.e. not america). I admittedly have my doubts about the CEO but having Tim Berners-Lee on the board was enough to get me to sign up for a free level account.

    Partner with the E.U. to develop the procedures / transition plans needed to implement open source domestic data sovereignty, yes... BUT we need to avoid trading digital dependence on the USA for digital dependence on the E.U. and ensure that at all times our data remains in Canada.

  • People, with #Greenland raising awareness of our massive 24/7 dependence on US clouds for vital services, I made a list of what (government) stuff would break here under US sanctions.
    RantingCanuckR RantingCanuck

    @paulbusch @bert_hubert

    I'll start with 3 off the top of my head:

    - Our health care information systems in Alberta (and probably other provinces) are dependant upon Oracle and Epic Systems
    - Every single level of government and most of our private sector are dependant upon Microsoft Windows and Office
    - Most levels of government use AWS, which already leaves our data vulnerable to the Cloud Act
