@renardboy Yes I'm well familiar with UV degradation of polypropylene, but in this case it was just the stitches that failed.

If I find some better scrap material, I'll make some better carrier. This winter the carrier has proven itself 🙂

@rq Our Iki is old and in the old part of town and the old people go there. The kind that gives the cashier their wallet to pick out the right money or brings a plastic bag of 1 and 2 cent coins to pay or wants to buy a lottery ticket but first talk about the lucky numbers as if the cashier knew them.

It's a bit slow sometimes, but they're always friendly and patient. Also sometimes good deals on veggies and varške 🙂

@suearcher @withaveeay Saw someone just jumpd the gate at the closed trolley conveyor for that today. Which, unlike the gate at the self-service, does not trigger a loud alarm 🤷

@mcSlibinas Yeah, we always bring our own bags and I had to get help for that and then for the carton of 8 milks because 8 milks + carton weighs more than 8 milks without carton and then to open the malfunctioning exit gate.

Also the area where your scanned items get weighed is too small for everything so you either have to play fucking towers of Hanoi or get error messages again because you removed some stuff to put it back in the trolley, which then confuses the attendant because they don't know what is scanned and what isn't.

    Very efficient!

@withaveeay It seems to be some kind of A-B testing, as currently it's a lottery. Sometimes the conveyor is open, sometimes not. The first time it was closed but someone sat there telling people to use the terminals. I pointed at my full shopping cart, blew some air through my lips making a motor sound and she grudgingly reopened it, asking me to put the "checkout closed, use self-service terminals" sign after my items.

Today there was not even anyone there to shrug at. I had to loudly ask for the old guy stuck at the exit gate to be let out. You're supposed to scan your receipt there for the gate to open, which didn't work for either of us.

So a few abandoned shopping carts may yet turn this experiment in the right direction 🙂

Lidl is experimenting with closing the conveyor belt checkouts and forcing everyone to use the self-service terminals.

Fine if you're buying a snack for lunch, but if you're there for your twice-monthly bulk shopping with an overloaded shopping trolley you can forget about that, inefficient, error-prone and not enough space.

It still can't handle buying a carton full of anything. Will leave the full shopping cart standing there next time and walk out buying nothing in protest. Customer feedback.

Not to mention a lot of old folk struggling to even do it at all, then the exit gate not letting them leave.

No wonder I see most of them shop at Iki instead where there's a friendly cashier that chats about the weather while scanning your items for you.

Having had coffee, the thermometer overflow puzzles me. From my faintly remembered assembler days, shouldn't it overflow either -31 to +32 or -63 to +64.

Perhaps it was just a malfunctioning outside sensor that sent its maximum value rather than a signed int wrapping around 🤷

    Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmarY Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar

Pretty cold. Discoveries I made this morning:

EVA rubber boots are no longer flexible and difficult to wear until your feet warm them up.

    LCD displays stop working.

The fancy microcontroller thermometer had an integer overflow and showed +64°C when it was... I guess -31 or 32? 😆

The -25°C winter wiper fluid is now solid, but it shouldn't damage the cars as it has contracted rather than expanded like water does.

The barn cat is still alive and got warm water and leftover porridge.

LRT reports -34°C in nearby Ukmergė and that diesel engines can't run on jelly. Apparently LPG vehicles had problems too, not enough Propane in the mix: https://www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/2825089/lithuania-records-lowest-temperatures-in-30-years-cold-disrupts-public-transport
