@d10c4n3 @noodlemaz @harri oh - I agree completely. If folks continue to use those platforms - I really do understand. Individuals (who need to be able to speak to granny, get up to date news feeds - however shitty etc). Makes total sense.

But please don’t say: this was a step too far and ask us to just suck that up. Surely the framing is: we have to use shitty billionaire media for reasons you all understand and we’ll prioritise non-shitty

But it's not one we need to throw at every person/org that's just quit the shit thing, finally - yes it's weird it's this late. But questioning that at them, loudly, the second they depart? Not convinced that's helpful for anything.

@JimmyB we’re a small political party. We have to use platforms to reach potential voters, even if we personally agree with your sentiments.

@JimmyB @harri and practically? Bluesky and Threads don't have an accessible AI that men are using to abuse and harass women and children multiple, many times daily, right now. That IS a material difference. You won't find me on bsky or threads, but to pretend they're exactly the same (for users/in terms of brand reputation impact etc.) is just unserious.

@harri @noodlemaz I’m not suggesting they are equal. But I’d argue strongly that morally they are equivalent. Tech bro, extreme right wing run. Both are closing Palestinian accounts right now for eg and censoring liberal voices. So morally identical if technically being shit in different ways.

@JimmyB @d10c4n3 @harri I agree there's an individual/org difference to consider.
And there are questions worth asking.
But if all people see when they quit platforms and come to new/better ones is 'Well it's too little too late' and various scoldings, all that's going to achieve, probably, is driving them away from engaging on said platform.

So there's a balance to strike. Let's just maybe not immediately jump to the scolding bit when people start doing a bit of hard work - and it is hard, much as these things suck, it's harder for orgs that rely on donations to get away from the highly-trafficked places even though they are shit. Internal pressure works well, too, so people who are members can be doing that.

@noodlemaz @JimmyB @harri Ah, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scold them. I don't know what happened to make them decide that X has crossed a threshold beyond which it's impossible for them to continue supporting that platform. Personally, that threshold has already been crossed, as with Meta, etc. That's why I say little and late. But I don't rely on donations and I won't place the blame on anyone. After all, even Graeber's or Fisher's books are on Amazon.

@greenpartyni I'd say “welcome to Mastodon” but I see you've already met the welcoming committee!

I wish @plaidcymru would do this - they do have a profile here, but that dates back to November 2022 (when the Welsh Mastodon server was briefly in the media's eye here) and they haven't posted since a fortnight after they joined. Not even cross-posting from other platforms, which would cost them nothing, presumably.

But then @ZackPolanski is no better - and yes, I know he's not your leader!
