    UPDATE

    https://mastodon.social/@benroyce/116534850992185405

    i do not want to be a voice for panic:

    the flight attendant has tested negative for #hantavirus

    we got a scary datapoint yesterday, but the data point turns out to be false

    score one for #medicine and effective #government response to #disease #outbreak

    as an american, i am jealous

    #epidemiology

    @benroyce Except hantavirus has a long incubation period (up to 8 weeks) and tests may not come back positive at the start of the infection...

      @benroyce what is "effective government response"? This combination of words is unfamiliar to me.

          @MFennVT

          yeah there's the quick easy testing for antibodies, and the much more difficult test for the disease itself, antibodies or not

          i would *hope* that if the WHO is involved in such a high profile crisis, that the more difficult test was done

          but also, there still might not be enough viral load, so i agree with you, whatever test was done, a small window of jeopardy remains

            @benroyce Not that I'm on the panic train here, but yeah, I hope WHO did the right test, too.

              @benroyce

              Thanks for the update… the flight attendant was definitely the most concerning but least reliable (until confirmed) element of the story as the level of contact involved truly would have fit the descriptions “brief” and “casual” which would indicate a substantial change in characteristics for hantavirus.

                and we can relax

                not completely relax

                but it points towards this thing petering out

                🤞

                  @DavidM_yeg @benroyce Don't relax yet. Was she the only flight crew member to come in contact? Did they clean the seat? The plane? What about his luggage?
