"Although heroin had already been invented in 1874, Bayer decided to sell it as a morphine substitute between 1898 and 1910. It was used as both a pain reliever and a cure for coughs, asthma, and pneumonia. The name of the product – Glyco-Heroin (Smith) – comes from its mixture of glycerin and heroin [...] sweetened the bitter taste of heroin and made it easier to swallow."
