If parents unwisely choose to not vaccinate their child for preventable diseases, and their child dies, should they be prosecuted for the child's death?

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon I come from a country where parents can lose custody is they deny say blood transfusions. So...

Though I desperately want to say yes, my feelings are really mixed because the parents are not trying to be abusive and sincerely believe that the vaccine will harm them. My sister went from a position of I could not come see her baby without updated vaccines to refusal to vaccinate, even her pets, within three years. She was hit by propaganda (or psy ops) designed to create this outcome. Maybe a loss of legal rights of their kids so they can no longer make these kind of decisions? I think the death of a child is a huge consequence.

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon They should be tried, but not like blanket-punished unless there's some extreme negligence. Prolly the most meaningful side from which to explore this might be, what exactly do we want to achieve with the prosecution and would it actually work. Scare others? If the family had children remaining, would they be protected more? Would punishing non-believers just hide and push the essentially educational problem deeper?
I envy those who have easy answers to complex qs.

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon if they're allowed the choice, and they make the choice and end up with the worst outcome, then how can they be prosecuted?
The way I see it, we either take away the choice and make it a legal requirement, or we have to allow these things to play out.
This family is in favour of all the vaccinations, btw. To the kids' pediatrician, we were like, load them up!

Depends on the cause of death.
-
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon we should just go back to the old system of ostracism. Public school requires vaccination -- no poke, no learn. That kept vaccination numbers high.

Or schooling numbers low, at least in countries allowing home schooling. Or bad private / religious schools. -

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon if the purpose is promoting vaccination, this won't help.
If the purpose is vengeance and punishment for its own sake "because justice" , that's the carceral system's values.

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon If parents unwisely choose to not vaccinate their child for preventable diseases, and their child gets the diseas and infects another child, who then dies, should they be prosecuted for the child's death?

@Zumbador @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon yeah, the "vaccinate kids or get a fine/kids can't go to school (so you get a fine for a different reason, or just get stuck with your kid at home)" option works better than this one. This one comes too late for anyone involved. Ideally you'd do something before it gets to death, 'cause who does /this/ help? -

Let those asshats have single digit graduation cohorts and stay the hell away from my kids.
