      That's basically what happened to the Confederate crew of the Hunley is it not?

      The Civil war submarine planted their explosive in the hull of the Housatonic using the spar on the nose of the Hunley and the explosion occurred either before the Hunley could back away or because they triggered it to explode before backing away.

      That's the last of what was known of the Hunley until its discovery in 1995. It appears that the Hunley sank shortly after the explosion, the crew apparently disabled.
