The new field of optogenetics won the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine. Very cool technique to switch genes on and off with light. I recall I began writing about it sometime around 2004 and had a bunch of conversations with one of its inventors, Karl Deisseroth - now a Nobel winner.

I miss my career sometimes but I don't really miss the 5 am October wake-ups to do Nobel Prize stories.

When I was at WaPo, the general Nobel Prize guidelines were to give US winners a big treatment & maybe a full profile.

Today I don't even see it on the homepage.

Now I see it, on the bottom, a short piece with very little detail.

The Post used to care a little bit about science. Now they're too busy normalizing the latest MAGA law-breaking to bother with it much.
